Everything you expect from a hotel is provided by this hotel. I was to meet a delegate in Kolkata and my company arranged me a accommodation in Lytton Hotel. The spacious was a heaven a business tour like mine. The hotel is situated in center of city so it was easy for me to reach required destinations easily. Then the hotel has a very good multi cuisine restaurant having a wide varieties of food. The room was very well equipped with all the facilities. Though i did not pay from my pocket but i can say that the hotel has a very fair tariff. I would like to arrange myself the accommodation in this hotel whenever i visit Kolkata.

Lytton is a reliable facility . I have stayed here few times, One of the Old traditional building just next door to the Indian Meusium. Though the entrance is not imressive opening in the side lane , once inside the gates it reminds of the old grandeur. food and services are good and reliable. overall rooms are spacius and comfortable. Little overpriced, though generally you pay it if you have little nostalgic likings. people who just want to experience the old british calcutta ambience with lot of heritage buildings around, this is the place to stay.
Best thing about it is its location. one of the most centrally located palce for stay.
very relibale pick up service from Airprt at Rs 1000 with AC car.

Hotel Lytton: Economical
Whenever I travel to Kolkata, I book my room in Hotel Lytton. It is on a side street called Sudder Street. It is very near the New Market which is the best place to shop for clothes, handbags, footwear etc at good discounts. Always bargain when buying stuff at New Market. It is also near the Oberoi Grand, so asking directions to the place is easy.

The rooms are neat and well laid out and the staff are very courteous. The food is also good.

At the start and end of our trip we stayed at the Lytton. The rooms were clean, well equipped, with good A/C working. No noise from outside, although it is located on a busy street, very centrally located. Reception staff very helpful. Great breakfast with a large choice of Indian and Western dishes, self-service. On every floor service people willing to help.

We booked five nights in Lytton Hotel. We got nice and clean rooms, but the walls are bad isolated and at night we could hear the door banging and the noises from the neighbour rooms. As soon as we opened the door, there were always two, three men appearing, eager to do us a favour. I would suggest, that Lytton managment should put a common tipping box for the whole staff on the reception desk, like other hotels do it. And it would be more ecological to change the towels only when they are on the floor, and not when they still are hanging. Lytton hotel is too expensive, for what it is offering.

The hotel is very well situated, the rooms are good (if not large) and quiet except for the staff clod hopping around the hard floors and talking noisily in the service rooms. But everything else is well organised. Both restaurants are very good. Its great peculiarity is that you can only use wifi in your room in you have a locally operating mobile phone, throguh which to get the log on code: an incredible situation. You just have to make do with the computers in the business centre.

Recently I been to Kolkata for 5 days.

I was recommonded to stay at Hotel Litton as I was expecting prime location to stay along with my Budget constraints.

Hotel Lytton is good hotel to stay, located at Sudder Street. Sudder Street is at heart of city, very near to Kolkata Howrah station. Most happening place in Kolkata with lots of shopping, eating and very good place to spare time.

Hotel lytton has good rooms, all toiletories in room given as package i.e refrigerator, mini Bar, Ironing with ironing table, cofee and tea maker in room.

Rooms are elegenat with interior up to the mark. Illumination in room is good as it does not directly focussed on eyes. Hotel is very quiet and inside room you feel very silent i.e. no traffic noise. So end of day i got a very good sleep in Night.

Being located at heart of city, access to taxis and local transportation. is very easy and immediate.

Hotel has got a food restaurant and Bar to chill out in evening.

So end of the day, good experience to stay with value for money.

At the core of this hotel is its British inheritance, a spunky name on an equally spunky street. This place has the look of an old British hotel converted to a modern four star facility. The rooms are neat and clean but the look of the room reminds you that its really old. Very friendly staff, prompt room service and a booklet full of facilities and amenities truly make this a good place to stay while on your visit to the City of Joy. The airport drop was also friendly and on time. But the serenity in the middle of the crowded Sudder Street is the USP of this place. Quiet in the middle of chaos.

A bit expensive - 5.5k INR for a nights stay is probably the only downer, but I personally felt it was money well spent.

I recently went skiing with a family The resort was very good, the Chalet very good and the staff cheerful, helpful and friendly. The Chalet was not in the best position - with a long walk from the bus on arrival/departure. The flight home was disgraceful - a 3 hour delay in boarding that we were not informed about at check-in; followed by a 3 hour wait on the plane before take off - due to a catologue of errors. I leave you to make your own conclusions.

The rooms at The Lytton vary considerably so ask to see first if you have the chance. I had a very large and light room on the 4th floor in the back of the courtyard and so somewhat removed from the noise and dirty air of the streets of Kolkata. Spotlessly clean, flat screen tv, no problem with remote control. Bathroom small, but OK. Front desk staff professional and helpful, let me store my bags for free for 2 days though I did not go back to the same hotel. One small nuisance is that the breakfast restaurant opens at a rather late 7.30 so if you need to be early, for instance for a flight much before noon, forget about your breakfast. But overall good value for money, especially as there are not that many international standard hotels in Kolkata.

After tying several other hotels in sudder st for similar quality I found this hotel to be best value. Its right next to the fairlawns hotel where everyone seems to go for a drink in the evening. Managed to get a room at the back for under R2000. The room was very clean and tidy. The room safe was made me feel very secure. The bar in the hotel is very well airconditioned and is open late. Breakfast is above average. Loved the staff. They are very likeably and trustworthy.

We stayed at the Fairlawn last time we were in Calcutta but never again. So we went to the Lytton just down Sudder Street. It is a terrific location. The rooms are very good The bar is good. The restaurants are good and the breakfast buffet is a bit eclectic (the beef casserole got me) but you can get a good breakfast quickly. Sure there are a few room staff that are a bit overeager but that’s India. The front desk was very helpful. And we even got flowers and a chocolate cake for my husband’s birthday. No complaints at all.

Was very impressed overall with this hotel. By Indian standards very good - but obviously less so by International standards. It was clean, with ample hot water - on one day, both hot and cold water taps were filled with very hot water! Makes for an interesting toilet process - it was the water that was steaming.
The service is almost over-bearing on occasion. People try and do anything/everything for tips. Just be firm - you don't need the bed turned down; you don't need extra towels etc etc. Eventually you won't be disturbed any more.
Relatively quiet location but about 5 min walk down a side street - seemed safe at all hours but not well lit at night so be careful of potholes.
Great location - walking distance to Park Street (10-15 mins) - one of the best dining streets in Kolkata.
Prepaid taxi from airport costs $5US - but takes about an hour.
Would recommend to anyone except those who want 5* service or backpackers who want cheapest available.

Stayed here for a few nights. It's fine. It gives the impression of being quite grand, but it's a bit run down and tired. Most things here were quite nice and charming and pretty acceptable. The breakfast bar was quite good, with a mix of Indian and western dishes. The one thing that I really hated here was the really irritating over-attentiveness. I couldn't decide whether they'd all been told to do that, or whether they thought it would result in extra tips. But honestly, you couldn't be in your room for more than 5 minutes without someone knocking on the door, ringing the bell or walking in. Any excuse to bring you new towels, open your curtains half an inch or do something equally unimportant. If you pretend to be out then they'll just keep ringing. Don't even think about having a nap in the afternoon. It's all very irritating. But hey, it's just a small point. The rest of the hotel is fine.

I stayed at the Lytton for three nights. It is very centrally located and if you want to brave the sidewalks, you can walk to anywhere in central Kolkata. The room was decent: clean and comfortable with a good working A/C, The restaurant served very good Indian food and the service was proper and efficient. The Chinese restaurant is decidedly Indian-Chinese food, not very authentic but good in its own right. I found the staff very helpful. I plan to stay there again this year.

Un séjour d'une semaine m'a permis d'apprécier gentillesse et sérieux des personnels. Idéalement situé dans un quartier hypnotique d'activité et de moyens de transport. Très recommandable donc.

I have stayed in this hotel for more than 20 times in the last 3-4 years.

The location of this hotel is excellent. It's close to the main shopping and eating areas, and yet secluded. It's also quite close to the railway station.

The food is also good. The room service is quick and I have never had a stomach upset in the past 3-4 years. The morning complimentary breakfast is also very good. The restaurant is best skipped because it is small and dingy.

The rooms are dated but well maintained and clean. Most rooms could use a facelift though.

The hotel's owner stays right above the hotel and I think that this plays a very important role in the good maintenance of this hotel.

All said, I am currently paying around Rs. 4900/night including taxes. This is a bit pricey for this hotel and I am looking at better options around in this price range.

The hotel provides reliable airport pick up at Rs 1000 with AC car. The rooms are decent, clean and of average presentation. I feel the prices are affordable and the services provided suits the room tariffs etc. For a Single room it was Rs.5321 with Tax.
Though it is located around New Market area and at night the place seems unsafe but once you are inside the hotel compounds, I assure you feel safe and there is security at the gate too. Once day breaks, you will be surprised to see the surrounding areas for example outside my window was an 19th century opera house like many parts of Kolkata, it has a lot of historical and heritage building within that area.
I will certainly recommend slightly above budget travellers.

Lytton located in the sudder street offers very nice staying facilities. The restaurant though has a old look, furniture and crockery serves delightful dishes. Surprisingly its not occupied during the day.
The rooms are big, airy and clean - the airconditioning functions well and there are no problems of pest or noise. One can have a sound sleep after a hectic day.
The staff particularly the reception is not very friendly and it seems the guests are unwelcome. I noticed in my 2 days of stay the warmth was missing and none of the guest were offered a smiling welcome....the communication is curt and inquisitive.
Though a good hotel it lacks warmth from the staff, i would recommend if there is no decent alternate available.

Most everything about the Lytton is fine. It is the nicest hotel on Sudder street facilities wise. However that is all it is. It is overpriced relative to the other choices but that is not my main complaint.
The front desk and restaurant staff were very nice. The room valets were a differenent matter. While pleasant, they ruined our stay here. On numerous occasions they attempted to service our room when we asked them not to. They literally forced their way into the room, handed over a couple clean towels, sprayed some who knows what around and stood defiantly until we tipped them. One occasion was ridiculous standoff as we hand just given them half of a piping hot dominoes pizza and a few minutes later, the knock on the door. Again the 2 towels and nothing else. We said thanks and dismissed them. They both stood arms crossed with that stupid grin on their face as we sat looking at them from the bed. After several minutes of standoff I gave in. Been in India a lot and never had a hotel staff been as aggressive as a street beggar. Ruined our stay at this otherwise nice hotel which was a treat after couple hard months and an aborted attempt at Darjeeling (24 hrs from bodhgaya only to be turned away due to the strife). In a completely different league and only down the street is Bawa Walson.

I was arriving in Ko;kata late for my first night of two months touring India. Not wanting to be searching the city at 11pm for a room, I wanted to pre-book a predictably clean place. In that regard, the Lytton was great - checked me right in at midnight, clean and big room, decent TV and nice breakfast. Wifi is free and reasonably fast for India although you have to renew it every day and one day they ran out of cards.

After two nights and shopping around, it became apparent that this place might be a bit overpriced for what they offer. Also, echoing what others have already written here, I found the staff to be constantly positioning themselves for tips - even to the point of inventing excuses to knock on my door to offer obviously unnecessary services ("more towels, sir?" No, you just cleaned the room 30 minutes ago). Service in the restaurant very explicitly varied based on how you tipped the day before. Annoying.

Its located at a good location and has well crafted interiors!

Rooms are good!
Service also good!
For Cuisnes, they have 2 restaurants and a bar too!

The Litton Hotel is located at heart of the city; in the shopping zone. Location is great. Most of the times this hotel remains packed and difficult to get an accommodation. I got the room here through 4-5 days’ advance booking. The room was neat and clean, comfortable beds but everything was a bit old. Curtains were smelly and moldy, the telephone was dusty, the stairs and hallways were also old; in fact the entire hotel had a faded décor. The lift was quite old – most probably first generation series. The shower was in good condition as well as the toilet.

Room service was a bit slow. Food was good and the service in the restaurant was also good. The morning breakfast was lovely: it had Indian and western combination and good selection of fresh fruits.

It is a mid ranged hotel and preferred for its location advantage. I will not mind staying here again.

the owner (or son of the same) is a car fan and you will find a host of high end cars in the parking lot. makes for a good sign. however room view from windows is abysymmal. even the rooms i stayed in always had the window type a/c's covered with curtains. horrible.

food is good and the service provided inside the restaurant is good. you will find a lot of foreigners staying here. if given an option, i would rather stay somewhere else,

It is 35 years old - it looks older and the decoration is dull. Breakfast buffet was excellent, but the dining room is dark and laid out like a buffet car on a slow train to nowhere.

The rooms were big if a little bit austere due to the high windows. The staff were slow to hand over the TV remote controls and to be honest, they were right to be because the TV reception was pretty terrible.

The owner is a nice guy - he was out in the car park each evening and has a fine collection of flash cars, his accent is great and worth speaking to just for that - though the gold medallion and bouffant black/red hair style is worth seeing too... He recommended the Raan in the Zhangi restaurant opposite the Museum of India at the corner of Sudder Street (it opens at 19.30 and is full by 21.00). It was a pleasant place in a city that is quite, quite crazy.

I have to say that I recognise and endorse a lot of the negative comment in other reviews. There were a lot of people running around doing non-jobs, often hovering for tips, while the basics were often lacking. To be fair this chronic over-staffing seems to be a Calcutta thing in general. However, I would single out the reception for particular criticism in this respect. Again lots of people insisting on all sorts of bureaucracy but not prepared to do anything to help or even provide the most elementary service one would expect of the most basic hotel. For example, it took a couple of days to get a copy of our reservation as proof of address in India in order to buy a local pay as you go mobile phone. When I asked them to book a car to take me to the airport on departure they had no idea how long it took to the airport (the most basic information for a hotel reception to hold I would have thought) and then refused to do this and told me to hail a cab outside. After making a lot of fuss they agreed to make a booking and have my bill made up the next morning. However, on checking next morning I found nothing had been done and had to go through the whole process again. I was given the distinct impression that I should not have complained and was treated with extreme rudeness on checking out.

The overstaffing was also apparent in the dining room with twice as many waiters running breakfast in a room a third the size with a quarter of the efficiency of any European hotel. One evening we were put right next to the renovations to the bar area and had to breathe in strong solvent fumes. On the plus side, although breakfast was a bit strange at times (cottage pie?), the lunches and evening meals, especially the Thai, was generally rather good .

I also agree about the constant disturbance in the room. This became very wearing. It would not be so bad if the basics had been there but, for example, the provision of hot water was sporadic and unreliable. On the housekeeping side, the dhobi service was excellent and reasonably priced.

Overall I thought that £65 a night was a lot for for India. I could get a better room for this sort of money in Brussels or Berlin. This hotel should think less about the bells and whistles and concentrate on gettng the basics right. It should also pass some of the money on to its staff so that they do not constantly pester guests for tips.

I stayed here for a day on my way through Calcutta, hoping to get in some sightseeing as it is centrally located. I had booked one night's accommodation online (a travel website offering hotel bookings).

The hotel room was clean, however the linen, though freshly washed had a decidedly grey tinge. The food was reasonable - I had the buffet breakfast and room service - and the price was what you'd expect in a mid-range hotel.

However, my shock came when I checked out. Despite having accepted my booking and the voucher when arriving the hotel refused to honour my website voucher and insisted I pay again. So I'm now in the midst of trying to recoop my accommodation cost from the website. I'm only happy it was one night and not several as this could have been a significant burden.

Finally Calcutta was flooded due to the weather, and so was the hotel. So if you're visiting during the rains you might want to stay somewhere not in a flood area.

I booked a tour for my family to Calcutta/Sikkim via a local travel agent (in Malaysia) and stayed in this hotel for 3 nights on 2 separate visits (4 different rooms for the 5 of us) from 23.12.06 to 30.12.06. Although I had read the above 2 reviews prior to our stay and had not expected much, I was still let down by the following:-
1) Most important of all, the receptionists (names intentionally withheld) were really not up to expectation. One was not able to communicate well with the guests (in English) and did not seem to know their requests and needs while the other who attended to us sounded crass, arrogant and defensive, when approached.
2) Two of the rooms we stayed in had toilet problems, one was stuck while the other had a lot of air pockets, spouting out loud gurgles throughout the night !
3) I totally agree with Santanu (thanks for the review) about the tip (not courtesy) orientated service. This must be addressed promptly.
4) Although the hotel is close to some tourist attractions (eg Indian Museum), restaurants (Chinese & Indian) and shopping areas (eg Hogg market), I feel that having to traverse along Sudder street each day with the rubbish dump at one end a big 'Shudder'.
In short, I will not stay here if I had another choice.

I was in Kolkatta for 10 days and rooms were scarce. I am a photographer and Lytton happened to be in the neighbourhood where I needed to be for my work.

This hotel was not my first pick and will forever be my LAST pick since actually staying there.

Attitude of the staff was deplorable and Management event worse.

The lights and power shut off every day. I discovered was just a ruse to make me call the front desk, which invariable led to someone standing at my door with their hand out for a tip.

The free “wifi” was shut off every day. This too was just a ruse to make me call the front desk so someone could put out their hand for a tip.

Even when I didn’t have a problem – staff continuously came to my door at awkward times to check if I had enough towels…..of course they knew I did; because the had just cleaned my room. Of course, the real motivation was just to have another opportunity to put their hand out.

Finally I said – LOOK – I will tip you all when I leave…..suddenly power and wifi interruptions stopped and nuisance “service” visits stopped.

Third world service, 4 star price. Hotel advertises “free wifi” and round the clock services.

My air conditioner didn’t work, so a service man came to the room. T

his is when the biggest disaster started…….the man started moving my belongings around. I asked him to allow me to d it…..but he didn’t listen and suddenly my camera bag crashed to the floor and all of the contents scattered.

A $1500 lens was destroyed. I went to speak with the manager,

Mr Punwani. He seemed concerned at first, and sent me to the Nikon store to see about fixing it. Nikon advised that it could not be repaired, so I asked Mr Punwani to reimburse me so I could get a new lens. He told me he would do everything to look after the problem.

Finally – after 5 weeks in India after having contacted him repeatedly, he declined to do anything. I finally went back to the hotel, and managed to get into his office to speak with him politely about the incident. He told me it was not his problem. He also told me that he already compensated me by discounting my room rate (which is a complete lie, I paid the full posted rate….).

Finally he said that he would credit me back but since the bank (HSBC) was closed, he would do it the following day. Lie. I continued to email Mr Punwani and the hotel repeatedly since my return, but have never received the courtesy of one reply.

Mr. Punwani’s AUDI R8 sits in the front of the hotel most days, his Aston Martin and his Hummer on other days. If only he would pay his staff adequately or invest in customer service…..

Even when I managed to get thru to someone who CLAIMED to be the owner, Raju P, he was completely useless, did not return calls, couldn't care less, and like all of his staff, was rude, arrogant, and couldn't give a damn as long as he had his money. I have every intention of returning to the hotel and doing sufficient damage to cover the cost of what we lost, and to inconvenience this useless place sufficiently. Cautionary words? はっきり言っていままでのホテルで最悪ナンバー1でした。 近くのゲストハウスにすればよかったと思っています。

Dining:

The highly rated Chinese and Thai food restaurant. The plush cuisine can conjure up images of being in Beijing or Saigon or Hongkong. Delicately aromatic Chimney Soups with a medley of flavoursome delicacies served with great pomp around a smoking chimney.
