As long as you look past the slightly disheveled image of the hotel and pick up on the lovely building, cool touches and relaxed, friendly atmosphere - you will have a great stay here. The hotel is slightly caught in a time warp - but with ...‎

Visited Kolkata for a business meeting in the summer of 2008. Since the meeting was scheduled in Central Kolkata, I preferred to stay in a hotel which was in the vicinity and which was moderately priced, but didnot lack any of the basic amenities. Royal Garden fitted the bill quite nicely. The hotel was located in the busy Park Street area. It had a quiet ambience in the lobby. The room, though not expensively decorated, was comfortable. The room service was not upto the mark. One had to wait at least half an hour for the ordered dishes to materialise. The hotel staff was courteous, but not efficient. Overall the stay was comfortable, but not memorable.

I stayed here 3 nights in total, 2 nights in first trip and 1 night on final leg on way home.
Paid for the room online for what I thought was the full price.. was asked to pay a further r225 after checking in by rude front counter staff.. Upon questioning why I had to pay and stating I thought i'd payed the total online they didn't answer and by judging through the tonality mocked and insulted me in hindi.. After paying and being overly friendly and polite to them they seemed to be less rude to me.

The hotel is located approx 30mins walk from the center of town (ie the nice part of park street) but it's an interesting walk through town and you pass atms and street stalls etc if you need to buy snacks or get money out. I have no basis for comparison within kolkata for hotel quality but do within India.. So overall i'd say the quality is very average for what you pay for.. don't expect any quality furnishings or for the appliances ie air con or tv to work properly.. my tv turned off everytime i tried to change the channel and the air con ddin't work.. the shower was hot water but poor water pressure.. But i had very low expectations and all i wanted was a safe place with a hot shower so i guess i was satisfied with that.

Upon checking out the security guard is helpful with getting a taxi or is polite when you walk past him.. he saluted me when I walked past for some reason but I liked the guy. The front counter staff were originally rude to me and didn't express any niceties with regard to me upon entering or leaving the hotel.. and i made an effort to be really friendly and polite etc.. when i left after 3 nights I said goodbye and thank you.. and they didnt say anything just stared at me. Customer service needs to be vastly improved..

overall have low expectations.. dont expect much at all. but if you need a place to stay on the main street for a night thats not massively expensive.. then go for it.. at least the taxi drivers at the airport know where it is if you need to get there without hassle..

We paid 2000rs a night for a mediocre room which was never cleaned. Room service was OK but staff expected a big tip despite 10% service charge. They "accidentally" gave wrong change (i.e. around 50 to 70 rs less quite a few times and resented my asking for correct change before I was prepared to tip".

One towel was shared between the two of us for five days because "Housekeeping" rarely answered and was such a hastle.

We paid in advance including the "luxury tax" in order to avoid any disputes at the end. That is, I wanted the full cost including taxes at the beginning.

We paid room service as we used it to avoid inflated bill at the end.

Every time someone checked out there was terrible shouting at reception.

When we checked out, we realised why. They asked us to pay 200rs for a "damaged" towel. The towel we had used for five days (which was not too clean at the start anyway) was now dirty with brown dust marks. I offered to wash it for them in a bucket of water and soap and to show them that all the brown dirt stains would come out in three minutes. The reception and room service boys were all standing around intimidating us so that we ended up paying just to get out of there. 200rs was a small amount considering how much we spent there but it was a disgusting demand and showed no respect at all for clients. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

The room was definitely not worth the price. However, all of our ammenities worked and it was a place to sleep at night. The shower was one of the best.

My biggest complaint is and was the service. The front desk was completely unhelpful, unorganized and rude. When trying to book a taxi to the airport, they only told us the one price of 700 rs. (air con) and the gentleman couldn't even say it with a straight face. (Word from the wiser: we found it on the streets for 200rs.) We had to literally beg them to allow us to pay our bill in advance and it was practically a fight getting out of there at 4am the following day. The room service is expensive and do not order the "pot of coffee" as it comes with TWO Bru packets and a pot of milk.

After settling the bill, it was like we did not even exist. There were no "hellos," "goodbyes," or "thank yous." The only nice person at this hotel is the security guard at the front.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL. Spend your money elsewhere that'll treat you right.

I stayed at the hotel 19 days. I´m a doctor and I was in Kolkata to help at an orphanage and to see old friends. My now grown up daughters are adopted from there.
Hotel Royal Garden rooms are disgustingly filthy and no cleaning seems to be done during a stay. Every check out of guests is followed by shouting and quarrelling from the staff. They don´t seem to have a system of recording payments, so guests are accused of not having done so- when they in fact have.
The hotel is situated in an muslim area of proffessional beggers which is interesting, and for my purposes it was in the right part of the city. I had hot water and a toilet and therefore I stayed the whole period. But I don´t recommend it!

The 'hotel' consists of very small rooms, which at the best can be described as untidy. They seem to have been furnished recently, however they show a huge negligence in terms of mainainence. The sheets and curtains demand a good cleaning along with the carpets.
The food was eatable, but was far from any expectations we had.
Needless to say that the overall price is too high for what one gets.

The good points could be prompt service and probably its location. By the way, it is on the dirtier end of the Park Street !
BottomLine - find a better hotel for all that money ....

This is the most pathetic hotel i've had the unfortune to be in. What could be worse? - I was returning back from my Honeymoon trip from Sikkim, and had to stay here due to train delays in Kolkata. Only the Hotel Desk looks decent, the rooms from inside are sticky. The Toilet and bathrooms were patchy dirty. And it had the most unfriendly staff.
Never ever go to this HOTEL.

I had gone to calcutta from Delhi for my personal work and I have booked single room for 3 days. It is one of the pathetic hotel on earth. simply don't worth it. Toilet was unhygienic and not even a bath bar was available. Room service guy was wearing the dirtiest cloth ever possible. Front desk was like hell, who don't understand simple Hindi and English. Pillow was hard like rock and AC seems to be generator. Never never go to this hotel even they offer you a free stay.

I stayed in a Delux room, it did not even look like a decent room let alone DELUX, the flush was did not work, geyser did not work, buckets and mugs are in deplorable condition, bathroom gave an impression as if it was not cleaned for days, inspite of informing the management did not bother to rectify the fault...NOT WORTH STAYING !!!!
