This would be my first choice of hotel if I ever return to Pondicherry. The rooms have a lovely old-world, European sort of beauty with marble floors, balconies, but at a budget price. The room service is excellent too, with an Indian and Continental menu from the restaurant next door. Only caveat is that the complimentary 'free breakfast' available downstairs is a rather depressing affair. I suggest waking up at 8 and walking over to one of the cafes by the beach for breakfast. Recommended for anyone on the <$30 budget.

Definately would recommend this hotel to every traveller whosoever visit Pondicherry.Housekeeping staff Change Linen every day.We always find Rooms and Bathroom neat and clean and very smooth environment, which is very appreciable. Family guest can stay 100% without any tension.complimentary breakfast in very moderate room rates which is very useful for business travellers.French Cuisines are nice here..With Swimming pool on the terrace of the hotel makes the stay pleasent and romantic

Our first hotel of many in India, and one of the best in terms of value for money.

The room was clean and the hot water worked fine.

The staff (especially 'The Colonel') were really helpful and friendly.

The restaurant is average, fine for breakfast, but there are lots of other options nearby and a handy supermarket just round the corner.

About a ten minute walk away is 'coffee.com', which is a really handy internet cafe that also serves excellent coffee .. as we were to discover later this is a very rare thing in india!!

For its price ( 1000 rps) this hotel is a revelation!

1. Helpful and friendly staff
2. Spotless bedrooms with aircon that you can set a temperature for
3. Clean bathroon with working shower with hot water
4. Clean white towels and sheets - a first (!) and I have been in India for 7 weeks
4. Great location - easy reach to all the main sights and restaurants
5. Lock and bolts on the room door

Only downside seems to be the resturant but there are so many other great placed to eat at eg Hotel Aristo which is right around the corner that thi sis not really an issue.

We stayed here for a few days. Price was ok and location perfect. Seafront and French area only a few minutes walk away, and Tamil area ditto. Italian restaurant on the roof was good. Breakfast was the only let down. First day was good , but day 2 and 3 it was dire. Front desk friendly and helpful. In all decent value for money. Room was clean and tidy, but nothing great.

My first solo trip and happened to choose Hotel Corbelli, because I couldn't get a booking in any other hotel that I had seen online. But so glad that I ended up in Hotel Corbelli...! This place has nice, cozy, neat rooms. I stayed in one which had a small balcony. They have a mini fridge in all the rooms, which am sure is good for all those people who would want to enjoy the low alcohol prices of Pondicherry. There is an cozy restaurant on the Ground floor, which serves Indian and Chinese cuisine. Apart from this there is a roof top Italian restaurant, which is run like a home kitchen by a gracious Italian gentleman. The hotel has a neat pool as well. Location is excellent with most places at a convenient distance. Its located in the French area of Pondy, which made it a safe option for a solo woman traveler like me. The staff is helpful, and kind. All in all, I would surely want to go there again... Not too jazzy...not too simple.... just right!!!

As it was a long weekend and we decided two days before we were about to leave for pondicherry hence I we didn't have much time to research thoroughly for finding an accomodation in Pondicherry.

I just glance through few reviews and found out Hotel corbelli to be satisfied atleast with reviews given on tripadviser.I booked room on telephone itself,I was delighted as other hotels asked me to pay advance and then they would book it.
As we entered the hotel i found it to be hardly very far from the railway station,it took less than 10 min for us to reach the hotel. The bus stand is also not very far from the railway station(as we took bus while coming). The hotel is centrally located on Mission street which is the heart of the city.Major shopping complexs and shops can be found nearby.
All the major tourist attraction are on walking distance from the hotel.
And the good thing is that this hotel is very near to the beach(10 min walking). All the eating joint and famous restaurants are also nearby.
The hotel rooms are clean but the cleaning services or bedsheets would be changed on your request only. The bathroom is also neat nad clean. There is AC and Tv provided in the room. There is mini fridge with mineral water, but each bottle is charged as 20 rs,so pls ask for information on all the items before checking in.
The staff was also very friendly and ready to provide all the information. They know tamil, hindi and english in case you want to know.
The hotel has a restaurant named Muthu restaurant where we had our complimentary breakfast on both the days. The breakfast was good and the there is a self service. There is an Italian restaurant on 5th floor but we didn't tried it out. There is a Swimming pool which can be used by people staying in the hotel. The water in the pool is clean.
Overall our stay was made comfortable by the staff. And I would recommend this hotel as you can get value for money.

I, with my family stayed in this hotel for 2 D /1N. The desk at the hotel was attentive and well versed. The room was neat and clean. A/c was working perfectly. Spacious and well placed furniture. Bathroom was well kept. Watchmen are really helpful.
This hotel is in the centre of mission street. Market is near by. For person, who wants to shop, this place is perfect. Aurobindo ashram is walking distance, so the beach.
The restaurant (MUTHU) is nice. BUT, the complimentry breakfast which the hotel is offering is not nice. Every dish kept for the breakfast was cold. Breakfast timings are from 8-10 A.m. Even if you go at 9 a.m, everything is cold, idlis, sambar, dosas etc. etc.
The tea and coffee is very bad. They prepare the tea before hand and keep it in a metal container. So when you take it, it is luke warm. And, if you order for coffee, they will mix one spoon coffee powder in a cup of milk and serve. South India is famous for Filter coffee and if any hotel is not serving that, then...................................
They don't have cutlery etc. etc.......
So It's better don't take complimentry breakfast and pay extra. It will be better to have food outside.
Other wise, the hotel is perfect and i would like to stay there when I go next time.

When I visit a new place, I look forward to stepping out of the hotel and exploring the places around on foot. That, and I've very finicky about the hygiene levels due to my dust allergy.

Hotel Corbelli was located right in the heart of Pondicherry, from where everything including the beach road, the ashrams, the shops... everything was within walking distance. The only time I took an auto was to go to Auroville.

The rooms were not exactly grand, but were very clean and practically furnished. at the price I paid for them, I was surprised I even got a bathtub in my room.

All the rooms in Corbelli are equally priced (except in the case of single and double rooms of course) and the hotel is centrally air conditioned. The staff was very polite and helpful in giving us the information we needed.

However, I wouldn't advise you to try out their in-house restaurant. Though the service was great, the quality and the taste of the food leaves something to be desired. You have some amazing restaurants in the vicinity so I would advise going there instead. Hot Bread was one of the delis I found near by that had amazing food as well as the best black coffee I tasted on my trip to Pondy.

I was intrigued by the italian name so I spent 2 weeks at Hotel Corbelli, from 7th to 24th Jan 2008 and I really appreciated the hospitality and the kindness of the staff and of the owner; they have made my holidays very pleasant. The rates are very reasonable Rs 850 single, about € 16. The rooms are ok and quite clean. But the must of this place is the position right in the commercial hearth of the city and few steps from the big market.
The rooms ending in 1 or 7overlooking the street could seem a bit noisy but I loved to be awaken by the music of the CD's shop opposite and I didn't change my 307. The lady, who owns the shop inside the hotel was also helpful and thanks to her I didn't waste my time looking for my needs coz' she gave me plenty details "in italiano". I recommend also the restaurant inside, the staff is more than nice and the food is very good despite I found the indian menu richer than the menu for "westerner". I hope to come back when the pool on the roof will be finally available, the owner allowed me to the upper floor and I can assure you the scenary up there is fantastic!
It's a pity they don't offer a breakfast, even just an indian tiffin, I think guests would be disposed to be charged more rather to be obliged to have breakfast outside. Anyway, the staff provided me an indian coffe every morning so I cannot complain a lot!

Stayed here for a couple of days. Room is a great find for a budget hotel in the heart of Pondicherry. Reception staff was very helpful in providing tip sand directions for sightseeing. Fabulous location to stay since the hotel is in walking distance from all major attractions in town – Aurobindo Ashram, French Quarter, and of course the Beachfront. Give the in-hotel restaurants a miss though as food there is only so so.

All in all good value for 1500 rupees you shell out. If you can spare more there are better hotels out there I guess.

Pros: Large rooms, well-furnished, centrally located
Cons: Poor service
Comments: Excellent central location, large well-furnished comfortable European-style rooms, fridge in room. Lots of shopping nearby. Good-sized water heater in bathroom. No parking on Mission street where the hotel faces, so taxis must park around corner. Good location - can walk and see much of Pondicherry including the waterfront. Front desk somewhat disorganized: were unable to locate my reservation or payment record when I phoned. Restaurant staff slow and surly. Slow service on laundry. No cleaning of room, no wi-fi. The complimentary breakfast buffet is minimal. Inexpensive (Rs. 1250/day for A/C double), and decent value for money.

I stayed at this hotel on 14th Nov. 2009. paid 1350 for a double bed with Breakfast included.

Nice things first: Good location walkable from all the major attractions in Pondy, centreally air-conditioned vents in each room. Small rooms and toilets but clean. Rooms facing front are constructed better, backside rooms do not have window, and the bathrooms are also small.

Parking is a let down, they have a shed at the back of the hotel and to reach there there is a narrow lane, single vehicle only. Looking at one glance you will not take your car in that gallery..but with help of escort and staff you can.. There is one key of the shed, once you park the car. the gaurd will lock it and return to the Main gate of hotel. It will be difficult to take out the car at will. But still there is a parking which some other hotels on mission and JNU street dont.

Other thing which was a big let down was ..there was a lizard in my room,, she suddenly came up..at the night when i was opening the drawer.. after that ..i almost had uncomfortable night...i will strongly recommend the management to get a pest control done my room was 201.
Staff is okay..but they only speak Tamil only way to talk is sign language..no hindi /english ..nothing.. Only ppl at reception can speak english.
Breakfast was way below expectations..only Idly ..the Vada was over at 9 AM ..and some boiled eggs in name of continental...They did not have cups for tea..so they palaced paper cups..

The restaurant has a pretty loaded menu..but at lunch time most of the things are not available. I will try some other hotel next time.. Need to streach my budget

Hotel Corbelli was ok. For RS 1350, I was expecting more. They only had one room available when we arrived inquiring about availability, so we took it. The room had AC, but it had no natural lighting... the only window was into an alcove that lead down to the kitchen a few floors below. Before meals our room smelled of Indian food. The second day we asked to be moved because they had more availability and we were given a nicer room with a street view on the top floor. The shower worked well and the room was clean, but the blankets gave me severe allergies. Indian breakfast was included. Staff was not friendly.

Rooms are good, clean and comfortable. All rooms except the road facing ones have no windows and is very cooped up. The bathroom is good and clean. The complimentary breakfast could be a lot better. They overcharge for beer as they probably have no bar licence and serve it secretively in paper cups from a water jug. Room service is acceptable and the hotel is near shopping areas and the Aurobindo Ashram. Some restaurant staff are cheeky though and try to speak French with their vocabulary of 3 1/2 French words. On the whole not bad for money but there is scope of improvement. A place that can be safely recommended.

We had a weekend break at the Corbelli in Pondicherry recently.
Pros:
1. Good, tasteful decor.
2. Neat and clean.
3. Food quality in restaurant Muthu in the hotel is great.
Cons:
1. Located in the middle of crowded market area and more than a kilometer away from the sea shore.
2. Car parking lot is a locked yard away from the hotel.
3. Not so warm behavior from the staff (I had higher expectations from the reviews I had read on the net).

We (two adults and one 7 year old) stayed at Corbelli for five nights in early December. Pondicherry was something of a disappointment which cast a bit of a shadow over the hotel. We had been in India for 6 months and were attracted, in part, to Pondi because of its reputation for being a European enclave. It's not.

Corbelli is is in the Tamil, not the French district: a lot of traffic. They first offered us an inside room with no windows but an opening to a light shaft. We asked for and got a room facing the road with a balcony. Noisy, but at least there was light. Bring ear plugs. The restaurant was mediocre but there are good places to eat nearby.

Service was good; room is small but clean. We discovered the top floor as a good place to watch the sun set and have a drink.

Overall, Corbelli is a decent place to stay if you don't need to spend time in your hotel.

Centrally situated in the old town - so the seafront and other town attractions are all within walking distance. Modern, immaculate hotel with professional staff. Small restaurant - but not open for breakfast, best breakfast option is 'Hot Breads' a couple of streets away serving good croissants, coffee etc.
We paid 995rps (about 25USD) for an AC double with bathroom - good value but, with no outside window, a bit stuffy.

We had been to this hotel after readng almost all the reviews availble for this hotel in trip advisor. we had a very good opinion about this hotel from the reviews. But i found out few more things which were not quoted in these reviews. So tought of sharing those with u ppl.Let me begin with pros:

1. Its a budget hotel
2. The complementary food was really tasty.(Had provided us with cofee/tea,1 boiled egg, dosa with curry, chutney and 3 small vadas)
3. The receptionist was a lady and treated us well.
4.Its few min away from the bus stand, and if u stay in this hotel,by walk u can cover Aurobindo ashram, all the 3 museums, the main beach opp to promenade hotel, gandhi mantapam, the park,Vinayagar temple n many more.(no need of spending 300-500 fr call taxi)
5.The Muthu restaurant attached to this hotel is a value addition to this hotel as the food here is really delocious.(we had plans of going out for lunch n dinner, but we had lunch, dinner here itself.especially the mutton biriyani is superb)
5.when we were about to chekout we found nearly 50-60 school-kids covering the entire reception.we were stun for 1 sec thinkg are we in the hotel or in a primary school classroom-had good fun with these kids.

So after saying all these affirmative declarations let me move towards the cons:
1.Never ever use the Aquafina bottle reserved in the cooler.we thot it as a compliment n used it. But later wen we were about to chekout we got a bill of 20 saying charge for using 2 water bottle.we were actually shocked for a moment and asked for the clarification. But the manager says except breakfast nothing is complimentary. But my question is atleast they would have intimated us prior saying that if we use that botles then we will be charged.
2. We had booked thru IRCTC,so we had the xerox Voucher with us.But the receptionist after chekng that gave it back to us.So we thot its of no use now n we threw it.But when we were about to chekout we got a bill of 1320 saying 20 fr water and 1300 fr room (though we paid the room rent thru IRCTC).So it means, dey never keep track of dese things accurately. And the manager was not ready to believe that we alrdy paid amount thru IRCTC until we showd him the copy of it.(thank god we had an extra copy.Or else he wld have made us roam to a net centre to get the prinout)
3.U can never expect Hot water at all times.Even at 10 in the morning we had to take bath in cold water.
4.All the rooms are with A/C.so if u go in the month of NOV/DEC though u never use A/C u hav no other option fr Non A/C room
5.Al rooms are Bed-Phasing.So sometimes it would be uncomfortable if u keep the door open.

But on the whole it was like a plesant stay, but i never say the best stay as it was 50-50 with pros and cons.

This hotel is reasonably clean and the room was nice but I believe from reading other reviews of this hotel and recently finding out that it has made its way into the guide books that things have definitely changed. The price of the hotel has obviously increased to beyond value for money. We only stayed here because we negotiated a cheaper rate 1000Rs. When we paid however they informed us that we had to pay the full tariff and the man who quoted us had conveniently forgotten how to speak English. The manager decided to show up 2 hours later to argue this with us and refused to budge. Had we known this we would have stayed at one of the cheap hotels of similar quality in the area. Unfortunately this had put a black mark on our stay in Pondicherry. I think hotels with this attitude are worth avoiding.

You get what you pay for here. I am pretty shocked at the good reviews here. I acknowledge that the price is very cheap, but for that price, you really are not getting much. The staff seemed very nice, but the rooms were really bare-bone. We didn't even get a blanket for the bed, just the sheets. There seemed to be a smelly dirty wool blanket in the closet, but we chose not to use it. The sheets themselves were slightly tinged brown, and the towels felt like cardboard. The walls were peeling and some even had some mold. We had a choice of room - either one facing the very noisy street, or one without a window. The bathroom was probably the worst part - it was dated and there was no shower stall (which I usually don't mind, except here there was no drain underneath - the water had to go to a small hole in the wall on the opposite side of the bathroom). The restaurant downstairs felt pretty grimey and I felt afraid to eat anything there, even the free breakfast. There is no internet. Also, the hotel is not in the French Quarter, it is on the Tamil side, which is much more congested and noisy. I would recommend staying on the French side. Yes, this hotel is not expensive, but at $30-40 USD or so, all you are getting are dirty backpacker digs!

I have been around India.. quite a lot of times. And this place could be the worst place, by far, i have stayed in. There were cockroaches in the bedroom and bathroom. The check-out time was not notified, which gave them the right to charge us for another day when we were in the room for another 5 mins.
This place has complimentary breakfast, which involves nothing but idli, bread toast and jam. This place was the only thing bad that happened to us in Pondicherry!

We are backpackers and have been travelling through India for around 6 weeks. Every hotel we stayed at we have managed to negotiate a lower price than the tariff. We did the same at Hotel Corbelli, however, when we came to pay they did not honour the agreed price. The Manager was rude, unreasonable and the staff incompetent. Do not stay here unless you want to be ripped off! I have never experienced such poor hospitality anywhere in India. NEVER NEVER STAY AT THE HOTEL CORBELLI!
