This place is 10min(1 KM) walk from Taj and about 3 Kms from Agra Fort (take a tuk-tuk). Close to the Hotel Amar , there are many other restaurants (or decent food joints).

I stayed for just one day in Hotel Amar during x-mas 2006.

The whole process from reservation to check out was very smooth and i
was pleasantly surprised with the efficiency of the staff of this
average sized mid budget hotel.

The email communication was very good and they also picked me from
delhi by taxi for a reasonable price of Rs 2500. The reception staff
were friendly and smartly dressed managers are there to make your stay
comfortable.

The rooms are clean and interior decor is not bad with a touch of
maharaja. No concern about hygeine of the washroom. The location is
convenient but there are a number of mid range hotels in this area and
you do have a plenty of option in this price range.

I paid Rs 2500 for one of the deluxe rooms and i felt it was reasonably
priced. There are lots of dining options in Agra and generally don’t
like to eat in the same hotel where i stay. So cant comment about food.

Overall, it is a good option in the mid range of Rs 2000 to Rs 3000.
Convenient location, clean and safe rooms, very friendly staff,
reliable booking system and good email communications.

Agra is crazy, and it was so nice to walk into our hotel and find order and a little bit of luxury. We decided to splurge for this night and got a deluxe, or a suite, or whatever you call it. We had a bath in the jacuzzi! We had a four-poster! It was wonderful. The staff was helpful, kind and attentive, and the restaurant was marvelous - our dinner was brilliantly spiced, and they let us sit as long as we wanted for a leisurely breakfast after our sunrise tour of the Taj.

Our stay at Hotel Amar has indeed been a very enjoyable experience.Being located on the main road, its an advantage in the evenings wherein you can just stroll along and do some shopping. The ambience itself is majestic with beautiful fountains ,an aquarium which my 11/2 year daughter took a liking and its art collections.
The size of the rooms are also quite big, spacious and tastefully decorated with beautiful furnishings.
One thing that was bothering us was the food as we were taking our young daughter Suhaani for the first time and at that time ,she would eat only rice as the main food. The staff was very considerate enough to make very soft rice especially for her.
Room service is excellent as we preferred to dine in the room itself as it would have been difficult to manage my daughter in the dining area.
Food used to be mild on spices which was good for my daughter too whenever she preferred to nibble with us and very sumptuous.
I really cherish the memories fondly of this hotel due to its warmth and value for money

We had a great stay at this hotel, only regret is that we stayed here only for a night as the room was very cozy and moreover the bathroom was great with huge bath tubs and spacious. Rooms were having comfortable bed, properly lit, DTH & TV, Fan, Coffee maker, all amenities. We found only the following negative points during our stay, AC was not working well (especially on the final day), Steam bath in Health club was out of order and finally the linen in the wash room were not good quality even though clean but very old. We stayed in room no 513. WIFI is available in the lobby area. We had compli B/F in the restaurant which was of very good standard (South Indian and Cont)
We surely recommend this hotel to other guest.

We really liked this place. It's one of the best hotels we stayed in in India. It has quite a luxourous atmosphere but isn't too expensive. They have a nice mister with a big moustace at the entrance. They have a lovely pool where it's easy to relax after a busy day visiting the Taj. The rooms are nice and well decorated. The place is very clean and the shower is hot. The breakfast in the restaurant is nice, the food is also quite ok. I would definately stay here again.

I come to believe that this hotel has undergone some reconstruction lately when I read some of the previous posts. We have stayed in November and have been very much surprised about the standard of the hotel and the friendly and helpful staff. As others stated, there are no wall to wall carpets, but all marbel floors. The room was large with a separate sitting aerea, and was very clean The bathroom is rather small but with everything you need. AC worked fine. The room is made twice a day and towels are changed in the evening. We would give this property more than 3 stars. We had all our meals in their restaurant and did enjoy it. They had a large buffet (lot of Indian tourists have been eating there) but we had a la carte. The service staff was very accomodating and helpful in a relaxed manner. In the evening we had a couple of local people on the next table and they told us they go there with their family every sunday, as it is one of the best restaurants. We hightly recommend this hotel. It is also close to both the Fort and the Taj Mahal. We decided to do the Fort in the afternoon after arriving from Delhi and the Taj Mahal in the morning at 6.00 h (and breakfast upon return to the hotel), which was just fine. The Fort was not very crowded when we arrived. The Taj Mahal was rather early at 6.00 h, as the sun gets up later in November and it was all in a fog from the river before sunrise, but we had it just for us and we have pictures at sunrise with nobody else there.

The staff make this hotel, they are friendly and helpful without being too in your face! There is a nice pool which isnt busy and provides a nice relaxing spot after a busy day in Agra.

Food was good, room was good, By request he changed the room also. It has nice attached bath room, hot water 24 hrs, good quick serivce

Thinking that the gym would be some name sake gym. To my surprise it has not less than 12 equipments including latest trade mill ..

I extended one more day as i could not get confrmed by night train and had reallly a good time.. they make food specific to region too,

I paid only 2000/- per day...real value for money

The hotel is stunningly laid out and has everything you could need in the room, my girlfriend especially liked this one as she felt like a queen. The room is beautifully finished with indian style silk, a samsung flat screen, sky tv, mini bar and bath tub. The only downsides is there was a couple of bugs in the room (nothing major), the breakfast was poor and the pool was closed due to maintenance. See video for reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kQMBHPp_Hw

Pros – really nice room, all amenities, deocr/lounge, peaceful.
Cons – bug in mini bar, baby roach in bathroom, better breakfast, too many buttons for Laura, empty pool ☹, pricy food

Buffet breakfast was plentiful. The outside area around the hotel was clean and hardly no rubbish could be seen or was allowed to accumulate which is more that cam be said towards the centre of Agra. We hired a auto rickshaw and driver for the two days were were there and were very glad we did as he took us everywhere we wanted to go and more - Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort etc for less than a tenner a day. Khan was his name and he comes very recommended. I guess he regularly waits outside the hotel for the tourists. Overall we were very pleased with the service and our stay at this hotel.

The hotel is well located. The room was well appointed with a flat screen tv, sitting area, mini bar and nice bathroom. We found the room to be clean but the bed was as hard as a rock and we did have a little bit of noise. The breakfast was okay but was usually set up late. The staff in the breakfast area was a bit clueless but the front desk seemed to have it together for the most part. Overall not bad for the price.

After the farce of Hotel Yamuna View trying to rip us off, we were in Agra without a hotel. Our taxi driver offered to take us to this hotel. We were worried that we would be charged a ridiculous rate to pay for his commission, but he told us that our price would remain the same, that the hotel was 3 star but with facilities of a far better hotel and that if we didn't like it, he'd help us find another hotel. He was true to his work (thanks, Kamal!) We arrived to find a spotlessly clean lobby in a well run hotel (a big contrast to the tired Yumuna View). The room rates were clearly displayed in writing and both the luxury and elite rooms were cheaper per night than the Yumuna View. I chose the elite room, but the deluxe room I saw was very nice indeed. Having looked at a few of the less favourable reviews, I fear those guests stayed in the lower quality rooms on the basement floor, which I saw on my way to the restaurants - these are much more basic (but you get what you pay for). My room had a fantastic wet room with oodles of hot water, the room was warm despite the cold of the Agra nights in winter and the room was spacious and recently decorated. Internet access was a little pricey at 70 Rs per half hour, and the packed breakfast was a little disappointing, but overall this was a great place to stay. OH! And did I mention it is within easy walking distance from the Taj Mahal - so all you have to do is set your alarm in the morning and trundle down. Recommended!

I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel given that finding a decent hotel at affordable prices can be such a crapshoot in India. We were looking for a decent place to stay at non-five-star prices while visiting the Taj Mahal and somehow found Amar on the internet. We called and immediately booked two rooms a few days ahead of our travel. Check-in was quick and rooms while small, were well-appointed. Bathroom was clean and hot-water shower worked great. Our room was on the 5th floor and while the lift was broken the hotel staff made sure that our many pieces luggage got to our rooms quickly. They have a restaurant which I rate just okay. Breakfast is included with the room. We didn't look around the area much but I am sure there are other other traditional Indian restaurants around the area as well. Pizza Hut is just 1-minute walk away -- not a bad option if you have kids with you. The gorgeous Taj Mahal is just about 15 minutes by road. We had a car, but we could just as well taken an auto-rickshaw to/from the hotel. The hotel seems quite popular with foreign travelers. Overall, we had a good 2-day stay.

Hotel Amar was a nice and very clean hotel.
The bedroom was good. Plenty of room, comfortable, and with a nice bathroom.
The restaurant was open all day with an indian and continental menu. There was also a cafe nero in the lobby.
There was a swimming pool (empty), and massage and gym on site. I had a massage and wasn't greatly impressed... but lets be honest we were only here for the Taj Mahal.
The Taj Mahal is great, but the queues to get in were quite bad when we visited. Make sure you visit the "baby Taj" with hardly any visitors, and the other side of the water for views of the Taj Mahal where you get the silly pics of you "jumping over the Taj!
I would recommed this hotel.

If you want a base for seeing the Taj Mahal that is clean and close this is your place!

Not the friendliest of places but in a town where hotels close to the Taj are expensive it does the job and is good value.

It is walkable to the Taj, though no-one except my husband and I seemed to walk!

it is clean, the air con works, bathroom was clean, has a reasonable restaurant.

I would recommend this if you want somewhere not too expensive but still clean and cool close to the Taj.

The hotel has good, spacy and clean rooms. The furniture is above Indian standards. The pool is quite big and a great treat after a day at the Taj or fort. Only dissapointment is that when you return late from the fort you might find out that al poolbeds are occupied by paying dayguests. For you as a hotelresident the lawn is the only alternative.

The restaurant has a good cuisine with a wide selection. It is quite stiff priced to Indian standards (RS400/meal) That's why you find many guests in the Pizza Hut next door.

My son (22) and I (56) were walk-ins to Hotel Amar on the recommendation of the guy at the Indian Railways tourist office. We stayed in a first floor room just off the lobby. Upstairs rooms were unavailable due to construction. Obviously recently renovated. Hot water, clean bathroom, toilet paper, decent towels, functioning air conditioning and comfortable beds. We used the swimming pool and the water slide, both of which were well kept. The health center lacked newer equipment.

Our big complaint was the ludicrous 150 rupee/hr charge to use the computer in the lobby. They did offer free usage to check train times but well priced internet (30 rupee/hr) can be found just down the road.

We paid 3600 rupee/night (~120 US at the time) which included an average buffet breakfast.

After reading the other reviews we were expecting a reasonably nice hotel, but with front desk staff that were not helpful. We did not experience this at all, the staff were pleasant and friendly - the hotel manager went out of his way to help us, offering advise on the best way to get to the Taj Mahal, how much to pay for a rickshaw etc. He also arranged a 04.00am pick up for us on our departure date, emphasizing to the taxi driver if he didnt turn up for us, he would not be able to get further business from the hotel.

I can't say about price, as our travel agent booked our entire India trip for one fee; but I can say that after reading how many sad tales travelers experienced at Agra hotels, we were quite pleased with Hotel Amar. After coming out of Rajasthan, the hotel felt more business-like efficient, than historically colorful or cozy. However, the room was excellent, sizeable for the 3 of us and clean and quiet. Hotel staff again were business like friendly and efficient, which was fine for us. Restaurant food alright; but it was hotel location that really was great. Not only close to the Taj but also to a fantastic carpet wholesaler, called Mughal Carpet Company, where we found and bought a beautiful carpet.

Situated next to a road (which is surpisingly quiet during the night) and with all necessary infrastructure within easy reach, Hotel Amar is good choice to stay. Clean big rooms sporting new furniture and good bathrooms. Windows are not quite it and let much of the outside noise in. Excellent services. Exceptionally friendly staff at reception.
Two minor issues with Amar. First being the restaurant: while breakfast is great and quite generous, we weren't delighted about dinner. But maybe that was because of a big party going on at the same time. Second issue is the price: Upon arrival we were shown menues for the rooms showing ridiculous prices. When we declined and were about to leave, the management all of a sudden could make very interesting cut-offs(50% off). Be tough, but keep in mind that the hotel is a good choice.

The room was large and clean.
The restaurant served good indian food and appeared to be popular among the locals.
The hotel is centrally located and is a good base to explore both Agra and the Taj Mahal.
The bar is a bit dark and dingy, but it is fine for a beer at the end of a days sight seeing, alternatively you can have a drink in the lobby.
The facilities were good also, swimming pool, safe, internet etc.#

This hotel is reasonably priced and I would have no problem recommending it.

I was satisfied with all the hotel had to offer, and found the staff helpful on the whole, though the front desk could dispense a few smiles at no extra cost! The lift worked, the water was always hot, the bed comfortable and the sheets clean.

However, I must say we had a pleasant stay for the first night in India, especially arriving from a tiring long flight and journey on the road from Delhi. The hotel manager was friendly and helpful, there were no carpets but marble floorings, and nothing we read bad about this hotel is true. We had a pleasant surprise when we went to bed - We could see luminous stars & moon on the ceiling of the room in the darkness when all the lights were out. Beautiful.

On top of it, we had some yummy breakfast and the waiters were helpful and friendly as well. It certainly helps to leave a good impression.

For us it was a challenge to find a reasonable hotel in Agra, one that was clean, had comfortable beds and was close to the Taj. The Hotel Amar fitted the bill, okay for one night. Went out to Indiana for a delicious dinner, breakfast here was again just okay.

We stayed for one night in Hotel Amar in Agra in September 2011. The hotel is quite standard, but clean. It is located on a 5 minute tuk-tuk drive to the Taj Mahal and 10 minutes from Agra Fort. The beds are comfortable, but really short. We both had our feet sticking out from the end, and we are no giants (both about 6 ft). The bathroom is clean, with a bath, toilet and sink. Breakfast was very nice with a large choice of dishes. The hotel also has a swimming pool, which is very nice to cool off after a day of sightseeing.
If you are looking for a standard hotel, without any fuss to go visit the Taj Mahal from. Hotel Agra is okay.

Overall a nice hotel, good room and nice swimming pool. It might seems to be the cheapest with all these amenities. However it is still quite expensive in Indian terms.

Some disappointments:
The breakfast food in the restaurant was not very fresh.
We arrived with the night train of 3 AM. We had to pay for a full day while we checked out at 10AM. So a bit expensive for only 7 hours in the hotel.

The hotel is located bang in the center of the tourist circuit ... close to the Taj as well as the Fort. Just outside the hotel are a few shops and restaurants including a Pizza Hut and it is quite convenient to get a Taxi or an auto rickshaw. The rooms are nice and adequate. Rooms facing the main road can be fairly noisy during the day while the rooms on the other side overlooking the pool are nice and airy but then there r rooms that do not have windows and can be quite depressing.
The Bfast buffet is fair (only vegetarian) and the restaurant food passable. The hotel occasionally accepts bus-loads of charter tourists for Lunch/ Dinner etc leading to overcrowding in the restaurant/adjoining pool area. A major negative is that the hotel does not have any common areas/gardens/open spaces etc that would appeal to leisure tourists. On the whole a decent place to stay for a short trip.

The beautiful wood inlay doors and hallways, and the genteel electronics in the room (a “do not disturb/make up this room” switch that lights up a signal in the hallway; an electric switch panel built into the wall next to the bed, with individual controls for all the lights and TV) just don’t jibe with the dust bunnies in the corners, frayed towels and mold and stains on the metal window frames. Also, quite distressing to have no cover sheet on the bed--just the bottom sheet, thin soiled-looking duvet without a separate cover and the bedspread. The bathroom plumbing was a bit dodgy as well. Mediocre but adequate breakfast buffet, appealing pool area (didn’t use it, however), friendly front desk staff and cheerful doormen didn’t quite make up for the disappointments. Internet was 75 rupees for 30 minutes of a somewhat slow-speed connection, their computer or yours.
Or, maybe we got the one room in the whole establishment that had problems.

Rooms: Big and nice design i can say 4* rate room design.

Whats Good about this hotel:

Location: It is very near to Taj and shopping area

Whats bad about this hotel:

Very average hotel which seems popular primarily for local social gatherings. Quite expensive for what it offers. Staff is not really courteous, only courtesy they show is for Tips !! Bathroom was not really neat. There were only handful of unclear TV channels. Food price is unnecessarily exorbitant, so is Internet. Swimming pool is namesake and the area was occupied by marriage parties both days. Noise proofing was so bad that slightest of road traffic would wake you up. Breakfast which is included in Room tarrif was very average. And this was their "Mughal" room !!

The hotel is located on a busy street, very centrally located in this crazy town. Only a 5-minute ride to the eastern gate of the Taj Mahal, right next door to a Pizza Hut, and very close to a half dozen souvenir shops where our group purchased T-shirts, wooden statues, and jewelry. (As you look at the front of the hotel, go left and there’s a cluster of shops with very nice shopkeepers who will bargain for a reasonable price on all merchandise.)

The lobby of the hotel is nice. The staff was attentive and moderately friendly.

We stayed in a room on the fifth floor with a large double bed. No complimentary water (rather in the rooms they had available ridiculously priced Evian water, 5 times higher than regular water available at the shops across the street). Double bed was OK but really hard, bathroom was moderately clean. Large flat screen TV with international cable, but the cable box is tricky to figure out. We had to call reception (there’s a card to insert and then two remote controls to power and/or change channels) and they sent a guy up who turned the box on for us and then expected a tip. Wi-fi is available for a price: 125 rupees, which is pretty expensive for one hour (and you have to use it continuously – once you log in your 60 minute timer starts and can’t be stopped).

Breakfast was included in the rate and was both buffet and cooked-to-order eggs. We only ate one of the two mornings we were there, but the food was OK -- not great. There is a pool but we didn’t swim in it.

Despite the reasonably friendly welcome by the manager when we arrived, the rest of the staff were thoroughly miserable! The room was fine with good facilities including a very cheap mini bar (!) and a pool although we didn't use it. Breakfast was an OK buffet.
The hotel has good wifi but quite expensive - what really ticked me off was having to pay to use a printer that was broken - however much I protested I was met with "this hotel policy to charge."
Watch out for a nice scam we came across here - if you pay for something at Reception, you will not automatically be given change - they seem to wait for you to prompt them. This cost my travelling companion 425 rps - beware!
As we left a sleazy sub manager tried to get us to use a friend of his to guide us around our next stopping point - he was persistant and really unwelcome.
One really good plus point was a local tuk tuk driver called Vijay who based himself outside the hotel - his English was fine and he drove and guided us around really well. Naturally, he took us to shops where he would get some commision but we thought he was pretty straight dealing.

The trip to Agra is always a memorable one. But cant say the same with a visit to this hotel. we had a presentation to make at the board room of the hotel. since the presentation was in the same hotel , we were accomodated there. You cant fail to notice the number of foriegn guests in the hotel. So we can say this is quite a popular hotel. we paid a tariff of Rs3300+tax for a standard room on MAP plan. This is the cheapest room on thier tariff card. when it was requested for an upgrade, we were faced by the absolute disinterest shown by the staff at reception. His communication skills were horrible and was infact not able to understand what we were requesting for( wonder how the foriegn tourists adjusted). So that was a big turn off.

These rooms were in the basement, so it is understood that there is a lack of proper ventilation. The rooms were pretty small for the amount being paid. Nothing much of a service to talk or mention about. The hotel boasts of a swimming pool, which is infact small. The breakfast is a buffet with limited spread and so is the lunch/dinner.

The TajMahal is at a walkable distance from the hotel, so a nice stroll during dawn or dusk would be a memorable one. There are many hotels of equal and better stature near to Hotel Amar. so finally.. u can give it the last priority in the list of star hotels in Agra.

I recently stayed at Hotel Amar in Agra, It is a decent place to stay. Quite close to the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort it proves an ideal location for tourists visiting Agra. The rooms are comfortable and quite good to spend a night or two. The hotel is a bit overly priced, I had booked in advance through the net, but on reaching there found people bargaining great deals at the hotel itself so would suggest not to book in advance as you might end up paying more. The breakfast is just average (It was a part of my package)

Rooms are ok compared to indian standard, may need some renovation. Room service was excellent, not qute so the staff at the reception which was rather busy with itself and responded pretty slowly. Location is reasonable if you don't mind walking a bit through Taj Ganj to get to the Taj Mahal. We skipped breakfast in the hotel as it did not look very appealing and preferred the Costa Coffee 100 m to the right of the hotel.

Located 10 minutes by tuktuk from the East Gate of the Taj Mahal, the hotel has armed security at the front door, a pool, bar with minimal liquor, and serves a basic buffet breakfast for 250 R. The regular rooms are nice enough and come with two twin beds pushed together to create the illusion of a queen bed, a small sitting area, minifridge with no complimentary drinking water, TV, ample storage space, good sized bathroom with tub/shower, shower curtain and good hot water in both the shower and sink. The rooms are air-conditioned but the temperature is controlled by the front desk. The hotel supposedly has wifi in the lobby 75B/30 min., but I was unable to connect.

Agra is build on it's one major attraction, the Taj Mahal, granted, quite impressive. When visiting Agra for this sole purpose, Amar hotel is okay.

Rooms: Clean and surprisingly good beds.
Road in front of Hotel: Quiet at night, but not much of a bother during the day time either.
Situated in Agra itself: close to Taj Mahal (10 mins), Amer Palace (30 mins), and Railway Station, (20 mins).
Pool: Great! but the side business of letting buses of tourists (not hotel guests) have a rest/bathroom stop near the pool was a bit strange.

Don't expect service with a smile, Internet facility or guest bargains. When discovering human feces on the side of our toilet, all the manager said was: "is it hard?", and than asked us whether we cleaned it up. Within 20 mins a cleaner came to get rid off the last bit off the previous guest. No apologies whatsoever.

My forgotten wallet was send via courier to New Delhi, complementary service of the hotel. Which was quite nice, although the courier was, like the rest of the personnel, continuously fishing for tips.

Worth to stay for 2 nights, but that's when your fed up with the service without a smile.

Friendly greeting from a mustachio'd door man.
We were given a cold drink whilst we checked in then shown to our rooms.
We were a group of three couples and all our rooms were quite different. One couple had a two room suite which looked like something out of Arabian nights, all gauze curtains and fake flowers.(not to my taste but they found it amusing). Our room had a Turkish feel to it and was comfortable the bathroom was small and there was no hot water at 7pm . Bedding was two singles made seperatley then pushed together with one King sized bed spread! The third couple were not happy with their room, they felt is was very shaby.
It had a nice pool area and the dining room overlooked this.
The breakfast was good and so was the service.
It is not a delux hotel but for an overnight stay when visiting the Taj Mahal it is good value, just ask to see the room first and if you don't like it ask for another one.

This hotel was booked for us as part of a package tour of Rajasthan and Agra. Our first room was old and dumpy, with stained walls. The bathroom construction and fixtures were very cheap.

Since it was New Year's eve, the restaurant and pool were gearing up for the party. Our room was right across from the restaurant and as they tested the sound system, the walls literally vibrated. Since one of us was suffering from Delhi belly (and with a 5am departure in the morning), we were extremely unhappy. However, after asking the front desk if another room was available, the bellhop arrived with keys and took our luggage to our new room.

The second room on the 5th floor was much nicer and well lit, with tile and marble floors. Although the room size was much smaller, it was more recently renovated and the furniture newer as well. But, it was starting to look dilapidated (although definitely not as bad as the first room).

The bathroom was also smaller than the first room, but with a bathtub and newer fixtures. We could finally take a decent shower with enough hot water directed at us, instead of the walls and ceiling. The towels were thick but dingy.

We could not turn off the aircon and finally slept in a cold room. Other amenities at the hotel include WiFi, gym and pool; we noticed a Pizza Hut down the street.

For our early departure, the hotel prepared a breakfast box for us with boiled eggs, juice box, banana, mealy apple, potato chips. It was much more ample than some of the buffets we had sampled to date on our tour.

However I wasn't totally happy with the rooms - the first one faced the main road where there was a lot of construction underway, the other one was very dimly lit and faced into a deserted lobby. Facilities were fine, I guess the atmosphere was just a bit quiet for me. There is a nice pool and I had a massage which was ok. I thought this hotel was average value for money (I paid USD40 a night).

My friend and I were looking for a mid-range hotel in Agra: clean, bright, and friendly service without many extra amenities. Booking last minute and during high-season, we had difficulty finding anything under 6000Rps except for Hotel Amar.

surprisingly we got "their best suite": glass-walled bath, jacuzzi, rain showerhead, sitting area, cableTV, AC, and the top floor corner room at 4000Rps (half of their advertised price). room was spacious, clean and bright, but still found it overpriced. it faced the street, so noise may be a problem (in our particular case, the thumping from a DJ from an indian wedding party at poolside late into the evening)

generally, it's an old building struggling to keep its hotel quality-level. some fixtures didn't work. room was not made during our absence, internet and laundry services a little expensive, pool and spa area unkept and gloomy, and restaurant serving basic indian and chinese food. free breakfast buffet was standard: piles of toast but not much to add to it.

front desk was pretty friendly and responsive, and warm front doorman's smile put us in the right mood all the time.

overall, probably good for short stays in Agra, but i would probably book early next time to search for an alternative. i'd also not recommend the lower floors.

Booked this hotel for 2 nights due to it being close to the Taj Mahal. Rooms were clean and modern. Bed was large and very comfortable. Got complimentary bottles of water and fruit as a welcome gift. However our rooms were on the 4th floor close to their banqueting room. There seemed to have been a party on one of the nights which went on into the early hours, hence we hardly got any sleep. You also had to pay a hughe price to use the wifi, however nearby you could use the internet for 1/4 of the price. Had some disagreement with the hotel as we were led to believe that breakfast was included in the price. However when we went for breakfast they refused to serve us and made a big fuss about us trying to have breakfast when it was not included. After a long discussion with management it was agreed that breakfast was included. Also we ran out of toilet paper and asked for this on a number of ocassions but did not receive any until a member of the group physically went to reception to get the toilet paper. Staff did not seem to care much about their customers, which is a shame as it is a nice hotel.

We stayed at this hotel as part of a Golden Triangle tour. On the whole it was ok but the rooms were incredibly basic and the beds were so hard it probably would have been more comfortable to sleep on the floor. Also, because it is on the main road it is also incredibly noisy so if you stay here be careful to get a room facing the back if you can. The service wasn't brilliant either, we asked for drinking water but none was delivered and more toilet roll and that didn't appear either. To add to that, when we checked out we were asked to complete an evaluation of our stay so mentioned the lack of drinking water and loo roll and were then questioned about it!
The food in the restaurant was ok although I wouldn't recommend eating from the buffet as it didn't look particularly appetising and I noticed one of the waiting staff re-arranging all the naan breads with his hands.

I stayed at one of the suppossedly best rooms'Mughal Room'.The AC was faulty, I wasnt provided by the mini bar keys, the TV remote control didnt function (despite repeated pleas to get it changed, no heed was paid to it), the toileteries were pathetic, the flush system in the toilet was lousy.I regret not going to Park Plaza which was offerring me a lesser price for the deluxe room.My advice....PLS STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOTEL!!

This was a dirty horrible hotel with an equally untidy restaurant. There were flies galore and dead fish floating in the tank. I would not visit there again.

I stayed here together with my colleague, PeterNLRU (see review below). Although my opinion doesn't differ that much, I would like to share mine too.

I honestly enjoyed the pool, the location close to the Taj Mahal and the beds.

There are however several points of improvement:
- The third floor was under construction, this was of course not mentioned when we made the booking.
- The elevator, which we tried to use to avoid having to walk through piles of construction material, acted very weird
- The staff was very unfriendly and hardly cooperative:
For instance:

The phone in our room didn't work so we called the reception. They suggested that we should come down and use the phone at the reception. Afterwards they wanted to charge is simply for using the phone (on top of the local costs).

Moreover, when we found out that some "leftovers" of the previous inhabitants were left on the side of our toilet, we complained at the desk. The best answer the guy behind the reception could give was: "Was it hard" ... (??)
It was cleaned afterwards, but no apology what so ever.
feel free to have a look at the picture.

- The electrical wires that you will find when you remover your bed a couple of inches, made me wonder how long it would take before the hotel burned down (see uploaded picture).

- The pressure of the showers was terrible and the temperature of the water differed enormously. The first we had no hot water, the second day we had only very very hot water (and no cold water to mix it with).

Overall, the room was okay, the pool perfect, and the location made it worthwhile, but the attitude of the staff would make me go elsewhere.

This hotel was booked for us through our travel agent as part of a package deal. This would have to be the grottiest and smelliest hotel I have ever stayed at.

Our room (107) was located in the basement, just across from the restaurant. The location could not have been less opportune. It meant that we had all the noise (through the paper thin walls) coming from the corridor of people coming into and out of the restaurant.

The first thing to hit you as you walk into the room is the dank rotting smell. At first we couldn't put our finger on the source but subsequently worked out it was coming from the leaky toilet (pictured). Smells aside, the room itself was also dirty. There were cockroaches in the room as well as dirt smears on the walls.

The state of the room was the same as many of the common areas. There was rubbish in the corridor, toilets were putrid and the walls near the bins had what looked like months if not years of filth around them.

On the upside, the hotel was well located with a coffee shop and a pizza hut in the complex.

We stayed in this hotel for one night only, and it turned into a horrible experience.
When we entered in the room, there were 2 cockroaches in the doorway. My boyfriend told this to me later..
At night we went to bed, and I was watching Tv, when I saw a huge cockroach walking in the bed inbetween us. We got up to see another one crawling on the wall. It was midnight..
We immediately called the reception, and my boyfriend cought one and put it in a glass and took it downstairs to them.
they said they dont have another room for us, and I called nearby hotels for availability and found none.. They said they would clean the room. A guy came to our room, with a brush in his hand and started swiping !!!! My boyfriend took the insect poison spray , and we sprayed the room ourselves !! Then we had to sit in the lobby for one hour for the room air to be normal again. And the time we got back to the room , it was 3 am.. And we could not sleep after that, only for a short time around 4 am..
In the morning we complained t the hotel manager. He said it was very sorry, and he would give us a refund, and he would confirm to agoda about that. I dont care about the money but it was the ONLY thing to get out of them - since we are never to go back !!
Anyway, I mailed to the online agent, and they responded very quickly, and told me that the hotel only agreed to refund hald of the price.
It is a very small amount , but the money is not the problem. The hotel was such a nightmare, and then the lie after that is very unacceptable..

I guess they say they are sorry to all of their guests and do nothing about their filthy hotel..

I would say.. STAY AWAY from Hotel Amar!

Did not enjoy our stay at all. We stayed in a ground floor room (115) and it was very poorly ventilated. As soon as we walked in there was an overwhelming smell of damp & mould and the windows did not open so we couldn’t air the room out. We quickly dropped off our bags and headed out to see the Taj Mahal at sunset and have dinner so didn’t realise how bad it was until later that night when we were trying to get to sleep. I wish now that we had asked to change rooms as soon as we walked in, as by the time we were in our pyjamas and in bed it was a bit late to do so.

The air conditioner was just recirculating foul smelling damp air, which was very unpleasant to breathe. I ended up resorting to putting a scarf over my face to act as a filter. On top of that the air conditioner was extremely noisy. Luckily we both had earplugs so this issue didn’t bother us as much the quality of air. Definitely invest in some if you are brave enough to stay here!

I ended up with a bad cold the day after we left this hotel and, although you can never be sure of the source of these things, I am sure that room was at least a contributing factor. I don’t think the air conditioner filter has ever been cleaned.

We have been living in India for four months now so well aware that 3 star hotels in India don’t always have the same standards as western hotels. We would have put up with the hard bed, terrible pillows, grubby bathroom, unfriendly staff, awful breakfast and poorly functioning hot water system for one night, however not wanting to breathe the air in the room was just too much! Couldn’t wait to get out of this place.

The hotel is average, a bit expensive for its quality. Breakfast is not very good.
But what is evry bad is staff and service: we were expected to elave the room at midnight but we were informed that our train was delayed till 5 am. Regardless of the fact that we already paid for the extra time spent in the room they phisically pushed us out of the room at midninght and put us in the middle of the route with the luggage.

My husband and I have been traveling India for 7 weeks now and without a doubt this is the WORST hotel we have stayed in and considering it was 3,000 ruppees a night we were so very disappointed and wished someone had warned us prior to booking. I have made a list below:

Negatives
Room booking was not held, even though I sent 3 emails and received a returned email confirming the room, we were made to wait 30 minutes on arrival whilst they searched for a room and the service from the staff was disgusting. No apology not even a smile.

The room STUNK, the smell was so disgusting , we asked to have the room sprayed with a deodorizer and after 2 calls to reception , they finally sent someone up, no apology, no room move, nothing, we ended having to buy incense luckily we only had one night

The bed was dirty I had black hairs allover my sheets and considering I am blonde it was not mine

Wifi – NO there is none, we were quoted 75ruppess for 30 minutes internet, 10 steps down the road we found a great internet café offering 50 rupees for 1 hr, there internet is a rip off and there was absolutely no wifi connection at all, I didn’t even check out there internet café it looked small and smelt terrible

Hot water 24/7 – I DON”T think so, we tried and it does not work we had 1 hot shower at night that’s it, that was the only time it worked

Breakfast – looks disgusting and we missed it every day to avoid food poisoning

Staff – were absolutely unfriendly, unhelpful and if I was their boss I would have fired everyone of them, on complaining not 1 apology or tried to help us, they were rude, and just appalling

Positives

I have warned you prior to booking, Do NOT BOOK This hotel, we have been traveling India for 7 weeks and stayed in 600 rupees per night up to 8000 rupees per night and this by far was the WORST HOTEL IN INDIA

Went to this hotel on the reccomendation of our tour guide, asked repeatedly if they had any cockroaches or mosquitos. They said "100 % no bugs" so we decided to book and at 12:30 AM we saw 3 cock roaches. We decided to find another hotel and they had the audacity to charge us 50% for the room. The staff was nice at first and offered us a another room but we just wanted our money back and to be out of there asap, that's when they got rude and wouldn't refund our money. We had to scream and shout just to get 50%.
I would only stay here if you like cockroaches.

How do you rate a hotel? How is this hotel given a 3 star deluxe category? I was given a room 310 where the AC never worked, toilet was never cleaned, towels were washed in the Yamuna! Ordered Rogan Josh and got only Liver!! The waiter said he got 'boneless' meat for me!!!! It was a nightmare! Please, please, do not use this hotel ever. Unfortunately, it was booked by Travco Holidays in Goa!! Who have never seen the hotel before.

I think the title of this review says it all. I would avoid this hotel like the plague! Impossible to rest here. We spent the night killing cockroaches. They came in under the room door, the vents and God knows where else. The roaches cloud any good impression you can have of this hotel. The internet room was horribly appalling. A breathing ground for roaches and other insects and a feasting area for the geckos. Sleeping in your car would be a far better option than sleeing here. Wouldn't stay here again even if they paid me.

I thought I had already posted a review. My apologies for the tardiness. This is an extract from my blog post http://loraltravel.blogspot.com/2008/08/two-indian-hotels-to-sleep-perchance.html

The hotel itself was acceptable, a bit threadbare and worn, but for a 3-star booked via the web for AU$47 (1750INR) via http://www.asiarooms.com/ it seemed OK. Later I realised that the price was much too high for the quality by Indian standards.

I arrived in Agra jet-lagged and sleepless after flying through the night from Hong Kong, arriving at Delhi at 2 am and being driven through the morning from there to Agra, arriving around 8am . The district was fairly rough and I didn't feel confident in walking around the area later. I was initially extremely pleased when I was offered an early check in after breakfast. I had a pleasant breakfast and I asked not to be disturbed; the reception staff reassured me that would be no problem and that I had a quiet room. The room was very large and the bed seemed comfortable so I went straight to bed. Eventually I managed to ignore the dripping tap in the bathroom and went to sleep about 9 am.

At about 9:30 the phone rang, waking me. But no-one was on the line. I eventually went back to sleep. An hour later it rang again; I tried not to answer but it just kept ringing. The telephone operator was on the line. She appeared to speak good English but totally ignored everything I said. She gave no reason for ringing and said she would send a man to the room. I asked her not to. She said she would send a man. I said please do not. Sure enough, a man arrived just as I got back to sleep. I got rather angry and again asked not to be disturbed; he disappeared in confusion.

I drifted off to sleep again after an hour or two. When the world's loudest vacuum cleaner took flight out side the room at 1pm I gave up. I rang my driver and spent the afternoon touring the Red Fort, something I had meant to do the following day after the Taj Mahal. That night, no-one had fixed the loudly dripping taps and toilet in the ancient bathroom. I finally fell asleep despite that, from exhaustion.

The sign outside the breakfast room advised that breakfast would be available from 6am. A sensible time when so many people are there to see the Taj Mahal at dawn. At 5:50 a half-dozen guests were waiting with me for the doors to open for breakfast; we saw occasional activity in the room, we waited, and we waited. Eventually one couple barged in and demanded breakfast at 6:20 and a large bowl of boiled eggs appeared.

I, and the other guests waiting with me, missed those dawn photos. Later, at checkout, there seemed to be staff I had never seen with cheshire cat smiles and outstretched palms every two paces eagerly trying to qualify for a departure tip. They failed.

If you are travelling to Agra, find a different hotel. Any different hotel.

This was the filthiest hotel I have ever had the misfortune to stay in! The carpets were horribly stained, the bathroom stunk which means the entire bedroom stunk too! Not to mention the bath tubs were terribly discoloured and dirty. There was dirt and grime everywhere you looked! The food was awful. When we arrived we were left waiting also for ages even though we arrived late in the evening and they knew about our arrival ages before. Also the lift is extremely tiny - not alot of ppl can fit in it, and if like us, you had a big suitcase and stayed on the 2nd floor, you were kept waiting for ages while the lift kept opening full with ppl and we could not squeeze in. DO NOT go by pics of the hotel you see on the net - it looks good but pics are very deceiving!

We only stayed one night but it was the worst hotel we stayed at during our entire holiday. The 2 rooms we had were large but were dirty, especially the towels. I would only suggest staying at this hotel if you get a good deal.

I stayed at Hotel Amar for 3 nights and 4 days. On the evening of the 2nd day, while I was sleeping in the room, I was robbed. My wallet (Cash $30) and mobile phone (worth $275) which were lying on the table of the room were stolen. When reported to the management, they just smirked and took no action. Even after a lot of insistance, the staff were not rounded up and questioned. The next day my cousin's watch was also stolen (worth $100+).
In the entire episode, no help or sympathies were offered!

All the bad reviews are totally true about the Amar! The lobby is nice looking but the rooms are dumpy, dirty and disgusting with a little bit of marble to make it look like it has some luxury. The staff is cool at best. The internet is waaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced, around Rs 175/hr. which must be a record for Agra! My room was a dump; the window would not close, making for a long, noisy and cold night! Avoid this place!!!!!!!!!!!

Agra doesn't really have a great choice of hotels in this price range, but my advice is to choose any of the others and to avoid this one at all costs.
