" We have been traveling in Bangla Desh for 3 weeks in october and had to come to Dhaka several times - it felt us coming home. It's really great value, clean comfortable rooms and all amenities, very good location at Gulshan 2/Banani. Another important asset is the staff at the reception are very friendly and so helpful. Thanks for making our stay in Dhaka so pleasant! "

" I encountered some difficulties with my return flight. Both the concierge and the front desk went out of their way to really help and assist. Taking calls from the airline and even by walking me to the ticketing office of the airline. Not a far walk but vastly appreciated as I would have been lost.
Always helpful with a big sincere smile. If I ever go back to Dhaka I will definitively stay there again. "

" Don't know what happened to make Aajay give such a bad report but I stayed there for a month whilst looking for an apartment to rent long term. It's extremely clean, bright and the staff are great. Don't expect a fantastic breakfast as the hotel does cater more for Sri Lankans, but you can order basic things like omlettes etc. Great place at the price... "

" Length of stay : 6 days
Date of stay May 2010

Good points
1) Location is really good if you are going for work. It is about 10 mins walk to most of the banks and business areas. This helps to avoid being caught in the traffic
2) There is a bar for pool and some drinks to relax after work. Since there is nothing much to do at night
3) Even for food, it is around alot of different restuarants. Maybe about 30 mins walk.
4) Just beside the national stadium and also the national mosque so plently of shopping and action around the area.
5) The food in the hotel is quite good.
6) Service is average
7) Internet is available in the room - wired

Bad points
1) The occasion power breakdowns - but always recover within 5 mins
2) Room service is somehow slow. Takes about 20 mins for them to come.
3) TV is always cut off or not clear. "

" Great place to stay at. Nice location, though a bit chaotic once you are out on the street, but that id the pulse of any south-east Asia city one would like to feel in a short while. Staff are honest, gave me back the full amount of Taka I left behind in my trousers' pocket in the laundry. Nice cuisine. Efficient and helpful staff.

" I stayed at the Marino Hotel during a work trip to India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, and I felt much more at home here than I did in a number of much more expensive hotels the same trip. Apparently quite a few other foreign NGO staff regularly stay here.

The decor isn't much to write home about (mostly faded 70s!), but totally acceptable for the price, and the service was great! They made a huge effort with every little detail - including offering to bring my free breakfast up to my room an hour after it officially closed! Clean rooms, free & fast wireless internet (yay!), lots of cable TV channels, great Bangladeshi food (European menu was just average), and free airport pick-up/drop-off...

I was really impressed, and happy to highly recommend it. "

" I stayed this hotel several times from my first visit at Dhaka on the year 2004. I stayed here more than 6-7 times till now.The hotel is located at Gulshan which is well known as on of the elite locality in Dhaka. Also it is located very near to my country dealer's office. The hotel is small but they have excellent service . From entering into the hotel, the reception , the lobby , Restaurant and the room every where you feel a nice personal touch which make a feeling of stay in home away from home. The rate of the rooms are also very reasonable. Rooms are quite specious and the toilet is clean. Food in restaurant is also very good. The hotel have internet connectivity which is complementary for me. I use to stay more than 5-6 days on every trip and in every occasion I use carry back nice cakes to home which tastes really good. They use to keep fresh cake for me and nicely packed by them. "

" I have been traveling to Bangladesh all year on business trips. Major Hotels are great but after many weeks they start to feel very clinical. Ideas Manzil was recommend by a local contact and I should have looked for a change earlier.Located in amongst all the Embassies security is very high and safe enough to take an early morning walk every day. The staff are exceptional, I have many people calling in to see me and nothing was to hard. The food is absolutely sensational, everything is made from scratch so it is a little slow. I am partial to Chicken Biryani and Ideas Manzil provided the best I have had all year in Dhaka.

Rooms are quite different. Large four post beds, locally made wall hangings and craft as well as timber work that is quite stunning.

Not a Hotel but a home away from home. If you do want a large main stream hotel this the place to stay. I willbe return Feb 11 without hesitation. "

" This is a very good hotel for tourists who would feel comfortable with Rs 2100 bangladeshi taka per night. The hotel is very well located, and it is very popular with journalists, business persons and particularly those from India. The rooms are good but being an old property, and with house-keeping not exactly to the mark, the hotel in parts may look shabby. The tariff is inclusive of breakfast which is a brilliant spread of continental, Indian, Mughlai, Bangladeshi food. Think of it as lunch and breakfast together.

Though nothing against the hotel, but it is always good to carry your personal valuables with you and not leave it at any hotel.

There are many hotels in the city, in older areas like Joy Kali Lane where similar hotels cost as low as Taka 1000.

Bangladesh is a cheap place to travel with food being quite inexpensive. Rickshaw fares are high but you must learn the art of haggling. "

" I stayed here for a week, and the service and furnishings exceeded my expectations based on some of the reviews I had read. The hotel is very reasonably priced, and is very pleasant, I guess some guests expect to get a 5 star hotel for 3 star prices. The hotel furnishings were nicely done, clean and fresh. The food in the restaurant was good and reasonably priced; I liked the local food in the breakfast buffet. Every single staff member I worked with for a week was helpful and polite. The front desk staff booked a car for me so that I could get to meetings. I had good internet access and the business center was always able to take care of any printing or scanning requests I had. The hotel is located in the central business district more or less on top of the Kawran Bazar, which is colorful but a bit intense. "

" ZAKARIA HOTEL MOHAKHALI DHAKA

In Dec 1998, I first stayed at Zakaria Hotel for about two weeks,
which was my first visit to Bangladesh - holiday of course, not
business. My room cost 600 taka per night - single bed, with
personal toilet and a free TV. Looking back, it was a bit of a
gloomy place, but it was alright and I had no problems at all.
I met a young man receptionist called ABDUL who still works
there. By then, M$1.00 = 14 taka.

On my return trip in Dec 2003, it had been refurbished,
renovated, with a new entrance, and reception. It looked brighter,
with a security guard and my friend recommended it as the
best medium priced he could find for me. The rooms were
brighter and there is a shower, and TV was supplied, plus clean
drinking water.

When I left to visit a friend for a night or two, I was allowed to
leave my luggage FREEof charge there.

I told Abdul I was returning for a holiday; he wrote me a letter
to come to stay at Zakaria. I find he works very hard and long
hours at very low pay. He is very helpful and connects me to
phone numbers I needed - these are charged of course.

The Hotel Staff wear white shirts with a green vest and were
helpful. Perhaps it is because I spoke Bangladeshi and
communicated with them. I chatted with them about their
work, families and homes. I am not sure if this is allowed.
Before I left, after 2 weeks as well, some came into my room
to take photos, and I sent them each a 4R copy after I returned.
They are polite; the cleaners do not wear uniforms of course.
I could even go up to their quarters just to chat with them.

There is a restaurant too, and now a bar on the left and a hair
saloon on the right. In general, I note and personally know
Bangladeshi people are warm and friendly. The prices are not
too high, reasonable, and a Bangladeshi friend invited me to
the small restaurant and the food was alright though I had not
too many dishes of course. The cashier was also friendly and
when they are free I can chat to them but try not to disturb them.

Of course, they are amused when I talk to them in their
own language, Dhaka Bangladeshi, and are definitely most
happy and surprised. I had met some Bangla labourers here
in Malaysia for the first time in 1996, and got interested
in their culture and was attracted by their warmth, and
friendliness, always offering me 'tor curry' though they can
offer so little and are badly exploited here and badly paid and
badly treated etc etc

Before I left for the airport, I gave the staff who had been helping
me some 'tips'. Tips are given in Dhaka, did you know that?
They work for such meagre wages and sure appreciate such
tips.

I did not see the Manager much, but I still recommend it at
600 taka. By now M$1.00 was worth 17 taka. He promised
me something for being a second time guest, but did not
fulfill his promise, too bad.

Now our dollar is worth about 19 or 20 taka. This means I would definitely per night a single room costs only M$30 !
I definitley would stay there now if I go again this year or the
next. It is good value for money. The rooms are clean, look new, bright and the shower is working; you are given soap and a towel each day, and can request clean water for drinking (and hot water too, I think for your own self-made coffee).

Oh, I need not pay a deposit or extra day's charge in advance,
perhaps this is becuase they already know me. If you pay by
VISA CARD your own country's VISA OFFICE will CHARGE YOU
a HIGHER rate than the official rate. So do take note. So the
best was I paid in cash the bills every week or every other
4 to 5 days. They do not demand a spefcific payment deate.

One good tip: if you have travellers' cheques, go to their
office somewhere in Gulshan and cash them from the
same bank - that way you get your full money's worth and
no extra charges are levied. After all you have paid 5%
surcharged for them at your own local bank when you bought
them. Another banker and advised me correctly and accurately
NOT to change the cheques via their banks as they would but
make you pay a surcharge but change them at the issuing
bank's branch - that was in Gulshan. I had bought
American Express T.C.s of course.

BEFORE you leave your country, get a list of addresses and
phone calls of the Banks of the travellers' cheques you buy
in various cities that you will visit. Unfortunately my own local
bank in Malaysia was really lousy and did not provide such
information. In Dhaka, the officer immediately printed me a
list of all their branches in Pakistan when I requested for them,
as I was visiting Pakistan next. Make sure you ALSO know the
closing time of the bank - they do close early in Pakistan,
l pm or 2 pm, I forgot. You definitely do not wish to be stuck in a
city without cash!

At Mohakhali, Zakaria is in a central location as well as
the Commercial districts a re just down the road. This time
there is less pollution as the baby taxis now use CNG.
Congratulations to the city officials or government. There is
less crowding than in 1998.

I WILL POST PHOTOS - I HAVE TO SCAN THEM FOR YOU
of the Zakaria Hotel room where I stayed. Please wait.

Can I send them to this page at a later date?

Happy and safe travelling!
